CS Department's FAQ Knowledgebase .: Computing Information .: Accounts .: Linux home directory on my office PC.

Linux home directory on my office PC.

I have been assigned the machine 'Eagle' in Computer Science. The Windows OS on it works fine. But when i try to log onto Linux with my username and password, it gives me a message along the lines of: "Your home directory assigned is 'home/user'. However 'home/user' doesn't seem to exist. Do you want to log on to the root directory? Otherwise only the failsafe session will function."

I cannot log in the failsafe session. However, i can log in to my account from any other machine.

The auto_mount map for home directories can only get updated when the system is up in LINUX -- if Eagle has been up in Windows for a long time (since before your account was created) then that would explain why the mount map is out of date.

If you leave the system up in LINUX overnight then it can automatically update.
