Sending email from home

I was trying to set up thunderbird at home, but I am not able to send mail through SMTP server smtp.cs.arizona.edu. Are the settings different when sending from off campus as opposed to on campus?

You'll have to use whatever SMTP server your ISP provides -- unless your machine name ends in "cs.arizona.edu", you won't be able to send mail through smtp.cs.arizona.edu. So if you're on earthlink, for example, you'd use "smtp.earthlink.net" as your SMTP server. Check with your ISP for the exact name of their SMTP server.

For a more complete explanation of SMTP server possibilties see FAQ:

One exception
If you test your email connection from your ISP using "smtp.cs.arizona.edu" by sending email to yourself, e.g., "me@cs.arizona.edu", you'll get your mail. But it won't send to individuals outside of the cs.arizona.edu domain.

CCIT now offers SMTP service to all UA users
You can use "smtp.arizona.edu" for outgoing mail from your ISP, if you have your UA "NetID". If you change your outgoing mail server to smtp.arizona.edu and send an email, you will be asked to provide your NetID and user password if not already entered into the mailer's configuration information.

Handy for debugging suspected local ISP problems.
